Household Hazardous Collection Day Sept. 23

Household Hazardous Waste Items

The King George County Department of Solid Waste & Recycling will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sealston Convenience Center (10376 Bullock Drive, King George, VA 22485).

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality considers any solid waste that is flammable, corrosive, reactive or toxic as hazardous waste, and it is important to dispose of these materials correctly and keep them out of soil, groundwater, and the county landfill.

King George County holds two household hazardous waste collection days a year at our Sealston Convenience Center. The following hazardous materials are accepted:

  • Brake fluid and power steering fluid
  • Flammable cleaning solvents (turpentine, paint thinner, mineral spirits, parts cleaners, floor strippers, rug cleaners, and spot removers)
  • Garden chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, insecticides)
  • Gasoline and other fuels, including lamp and heating oils
  • Household cleaners (ammonia, drain cleaner, rust remover, tile/shower cleaner, and more)
  • Oil-based paint products (paint & spray paint, caulk, wood preservative, wood stain)
  • Swimming pool chemicals
  • Universal materials (includes mercury containing items: thermometers, thermostats)

Latex paint is not a hazardous material, and if dry, it can be disposed of as trash at either convenience center. Removing the lid and mixing any wet paint with sand or kitty litter will speed up the drying process.

You also don’t have to wait for a household hazardous waste day to recycle motor oil, hydraulic fluid or gear oil. All three can go into the used oil tanks at either convenience center.

Used anti-freeze can also go into the used anti-freeze tanks at either center.
