1. Can I dispose of hazardous materials?

The following household hazardous waste is only accepted on our Household Hazardous Waste Day:

• Gasoline, brake fluid, power steering fluid
• Household cleaners (ammonia, drain cleaner, rust remover, tile/shower cleaner and more)
• Universal materials (include mercury containing items: thermometers, thermostats)
• Oil based-paint products (paint & spray paint, caulk, wood preservative, wood stain)
• Garden chemicals (pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, insecticides)
• Swimming pool chemicals

2. What can be recycled?

The following can be recycled:

• Aluminum cans
• Aluminum foil
• Anti-freeze
• Clean and empty milk & juice cartons
• Lead-acid batteries (usually for cars/trucks and toy vehicles)
• CFC containing appliances (we remove the CFCs for recycling and then place them in the scrap metal pile)
• Cardboard
• Computer, fax & copy paper
• Construction paper
• Cooking oil
• Diesel fuel (can be added to used oil)
• Glass bottles - green, clear & brown
• Clean and empty juice boxes
• Junk mail - envelopes & coupons
• Kraft paper - brown grocery bags
• Magazines & catalogs
• Clean metal food containers
• Newspaper
• Paper egg cartons
• Plastic containers
• Scrap metal
• Telephone & paperback books
• Transmission fluid (can be added to used oil)
• Used oil
• Yard waste - Main landfill and Sealston convenience center only

3. What cannot be accepted at the Purkins - Route 205 Center?

The following cannot be accepted at the Purkins - Route 205 convenience center:

• Animal carcasses
• Appliances
• Televisions
• Brush
• Bulk items
• Construction debris
• Fluorescent lights
• Furniture
• Mattresses
• Mirrors
• Paint and free liquids
• Propane tanks
• Sheet glass
• Tires

All of the above items can be disposed of at the Sealston Landfill except propane tanks and non-latex paints.

4. Do I need a county sticker to use the landfill or convenience centers?

Yes.  Effective December 1, 2017, any King George County resident or property owner using one of the County’s convenience centers or the sanitary landfill to dispose of household waste and/or recyclable material must have a valid county license decal affixed to their vehicle or properly displayed written authorization from the county administrator.  According to Section 13-82 of the Code of the County of King George, Virginia, the county license decal must be “properly affixed on the vehicle windshield to the right of the state inspection sticker.”

5. Is there a charge for any items from my own residence?

No, all services at the facility are free of charge to residents of King George County, as long as they are not business related, and delivered in a non-commercial vehicle.

6. Can I get an exemption to allow me to use my business vehicle to drop off my household trash?

Unfortunately, we are not able to grant this type of exemption.

7. Can I use a commercial sized vehicle to deliver the waste from construction/cleanup on my property?

This is possible, but only by special pre-approval by the Director of the Department. The approval will be event specific, and not open ended. Please contact Mike Newchok at 540-775-3267, or by email at mnewchok@co.kinggeorge.state.va.us, for further information.

8. Where can I view the Convenience Center Use Policy?

Revised King George County Convenience Center Use Policy

Effective December 1, 2017, any King George County resident or property owner using one of the County’s convenience centers or the sanitary landfill to dispose of household waste and/or recyclable material must have a valid county license decal affixed to their vehicle or properly displayed written authorization from the county administrator.

According to Section 13-82 of the Code of the County of King George, Virginia, the county license decal must be “properly affixed on the vehicle windshield to the right of the state inspection sticker.”

King George County offers residents and owners of real property in King George County free disposal of household waste and recyclables at either of our two convenience centers.  All household waste must be generated only from the property owner’s residence located in King George County. 

If you do not have a county license decal, one can be obtained from the County Commissioner of the Revenue’s office at 10459 Courthouse Drive, Suite 101, King George, VA 22485.  Their office phone number is (540) 775-4664, and their hours of operation are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
