Personal Property / Vehicle Taxes

Declaration of Tangible Personal Property tax notices are no longer sent out by the Commissioner of the Revenue's office to existing King George residents in January; however, the state of Virginia requires residents to notify the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles along with our office within 30 days to register their vehicles, change their address or when acquiring/disposing of a vehicle.

King George County breaks its personal property tax bill into two payments for the year. The first half payment is due June 5th and the second half is due December 5th.

The 2025 tax rate for personal property in King George County is set at $3.25 per $100 of the assessed value.

For vehicles, the tax is based on the clean trade-in value as listed in the National Automobile Dealers Association Used Car Guide published in January of the current tax year. A vehicle is subject to tax if it is normally garaged or parked in King George County, even if registered in another state. Failure to register your vehicle in King George County after the 30 days given will result in a $250.00 fine per vehicle.

Personal property tax relief provides tax relief for any passenger car, motorcycle, pickup or panel truck having a registered gross weight of less than 10,001 pounds. The vehicle must be owned or leased by an individual and NOT used for business purposes. For qualified vehicles; your tax bill is reduced by the applicable tax relief percentage for the tax year on the first $20,000 that NADA values your vehicle. The personal property tax relief percentage for tax year 2025 is set at 24%.

2024 Update to Prorating Locality

As of Jan. 1, 2024, King George County will be prorating personal property taxes to include motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers. Proration allows residents to only pay for personal property taxes for the duration of their residency, as well as the duration of ownership, in King George County in a given calendar year. The proration bills will be sent as usual in residents’ June and December tax bills, reflecting the months in which the residents owned personal property in King George County. Additionally, the vehicle license fee has been repealed. In past years, this fee was applied annually to residents’ tax bills in the amount of $23 for private passenger vehicles, $18 for motorcycles, and $7.50 for trailer and semi-trailer. This fee will no longer be applied to residents' tax bills as of 2024. County stickers are still available for pick up from the commissioner of the revenue’s office, which allow you to use the Sealston and Purkins’ Corner Convenience Centers.
