Customers served by King George Service Authority may have recently received notice that the status of their home plumbing material is unknown. The authority serves safe water to its customers, but water can become contaminated when it enters the plumbing of a home built before 1986 with lead pipes.
The notice is the result of a new requirement per the Lead and Copper Rule Revisions by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) to conduct an inventory of waterworks and notify all customers whose status is unknown. Customers whose status is unknown are encouraged to seek additional resources to confirm the status of the plumbing in their home. Call VDH for assistance at 540-775-3111.
In 1991, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published the Lead and Copper Rule, which requires systems to monitor drinking water at customer taps.
Notices were issued to all customers with unknown plumbing material status by the King George Service Authority, not just homes built before 1986.
To ensure the safety of its customers, the King George Service Authority will be inspecting service connection lines at customer meters for all homes with unknown material status over the next several months to ensure customers are informed about the potential risk lead plumbing can cause in homes built before 1986.
